Sam Lau is major in percussion performance under the tutelage of Ms. Woo Shuk-fai Sophia. He is also studying orchestral conducting under Ms. Ip Wing-wun Vivian. Sam also previously studied under percussionist Dr. Lung Heung-wing, as well as participated in various public performances after Lung and Woo’s footsteps, such as in Dr. Mui Kwong-chiu’s multimedia production “Let dreams fly” and “Let dreams fly II – Over the Rainbow”, “ArtAlive @ Park 2012”, and “Hong Kong Classics; Art, Culture and Music — Airport Proms”, as well as “Midday Oasis” organised by Chung Chi College, CUHK.
Recently, Sam has assisted in leading the WYHK School Choir in the 2023 Hong Kong Inter-School Choral Festival to a Silver Award, obtaining its first award since the pandemic. Sam was also awarded the only special mention in the VII Atlantic Coast International Conducting Masterclass & Competition.
Sam is currently chairman and conductor of both the CUHK Student Orchestra, vice-chairman and conductor of the Chung Chi Student Chinese Orchestra, assistant conductor of the WYHK Chinese Orchestra, and the conductor and ensemble coach of the WYHK Percussion Ensemble. He is also a percussionist of the Pro Arte Orchestra of Hong Kong, the Hong Kong YWCA Chinese Orchestra, the Chung Chi Orchestra, Chung Chi Wind Orchestra, Chung Chi Student Chinese Orchestra, Student Orchestra, and the New Music Ensemble (Percussion) at CUHK.
